RE: Is 4 wheel drive overkill?

I've used 4 wd several times in Florida, twice to get unstuck in loose sand maneuvering on/off campsites, and a few times when it helped to creep along in low range, especially backing uphill onto a site. And, of course, snow and mud can make it awfully nice at home in Maine.

RE: Newbie looking for boondocking near Tappan Zee Bridge

Follow up to the above. We are on our way south and ned to advise anyone reading these posts that travel on the Garden State Pkwy will cost you a $75. fine if you get caught as I did. Can't complain as I was told there is a tunnel near the end with 7 foot clearance. :E Web forums are a good thing but the information is not always helpful.
What exactly was the violation that cost you $75? We don't know much at this point other than you posted your original question in Class A Motorhomes. I have traveled the entire length of the GSP numerous times hauling my travel trailer without incident. I would think a 7 foot clearance would have gotten my attention. Anyone know what gives here? Is there a new law and/or a new tunnel on the GSP? I'm headed that way again soon.

RE: whrere are you camping for Thanksgiving

10 days at Twin Lakes COE near Clemson SC - site 92. We'll be leaving home next Wednesday for our 5 months down south.
Ted H.
"...next Wednesday..." Hey, that was yesterday! Have a safe and fun trip, Ted. Maybe we'll catch up with you somewhere down the line. Tom.
As for the original question, we'll be at home in Maine for Thanksgiving but will be rolling southward a week or two after.

RE: Danger: Dog Turns on Gas Range Top

Trust me, this can happen. Our cat actually lit a burner jumping from the stove top to the floor as he normally does by planting his front paws on the vertical surface (where the knobs are) for a second or two before pushing off. It was long enough for the gas to flow, the igniter thingy to spark and the flames to begin. There was minor singeing on his tail. I saw it all happen, but no time to react. Wouldn't have believed it was possible. A far worse case could have been if the gas got turned on, but no ignition and no one there.
I took the knobs off and only have to use the one for the oven, which I put back on as needed; the stove-top burners can be turned on just using the stem. Dumb cat still hasn't learned not to go there, but at least now he can't start a burner going or fill the rig with propane.
I often think, what if we'd been away and came back to find the cat curled up asleep (normal) and a stove burner mysteriously lit.

RE: CG Picture Reviews and Campsite Maps

Nice addition to your site, Ted. Good job. We'll be leaving the North Country about three weeks after you; hope to catch up with you somewhere this winter, or maybe in Maine after that. Happy trails...Tom.

RE: Storing camper in the dirt

if possible I would lay a vapor barrier under the whole trailer...
Good idea. Get sheet of poly at least as big as your rig, lay it out, drive/pull the rig onto it, weight down poly to keep from blowing around. That alone will help with the mice situation, but in the depressions in the poly where the tires and tongue jack are you can also throw a couple hands-full of mothballs in each one.
"Don't poison mice," they will die and stink.
Do poison mice, they will live and chew up things, make a general mess, pee and poop all over. And stink.

RE: Newburgh NY to Harrisburg PA

Based on what I read here, the first option would be my choice. Sounds like part of the NJ portion if I-78 is still a wild ride, while the PA portion is much improved over last year. Please report back to us with your own findings. Good luck.

RE: Smartest thing you DIDN'T buy??

Blue tote tank for us. After watching others spend hours emptying making multiple trips I'm glad we decided it was a LOT easier to just hitch up and take everything to the dump station and be back drinking a cold one within an hour. No spills and no handling nasty stuff multiple times.
That's my thinking, too. I begrudge the space a tote tank takes up to perform a single function, which I can get done quite nicely without one.

RE: Rt. 78 in NJ and Pa.

I'm heading down to Myrtle Beach from NY this weekend and was wondering if anyone knows the condition of Rt. 78. Last time I went that way was a couple of years ago and the construction was awful. I usually go 84 to 81 but 78 is shorter. Any help would be appreciated.
The responses I got to a similar question last week: clicky

RE: Newbie looking for boondocking near Tappan Zee Bridge

... If you are going down Garden State Pkwy they have a service plaza right after you get on and they will let you stay overnight. Or there is the Palisades Mall right off I87 just over the Tappen Zee bridge on west side of river. Very big mall and I'm sure you can stay there...
That's good to know about the GSP service plaza, and I might add that gas prices are usually lower there, too. I spent most of one night at the Palisades Mall with no problem (down by Home Depot seemed less busy);as malls go, it's one of the more interesting ones, good eats, entertainment, etc.

I-78, western NJ - eastern PA

Several years ago this road was so bad I swore I wouldn't take it again unless/until it was fixed. I'm hearing conflicting reports on its present condition, some say still bad, others say it's much better now. Anyone care to add to the confusion?

RE: from Albany NY to Florida

That's one of several ways to avoid the cities (NY through Wash. DC) that folks often recommend on this forum. I've used it, but not for several years because of the poor condition of I-78. Now that I've had my fillings replaced, if I could get an indication from someone that 78 is better now I'd reconsider and go that way when we migrate south in December. Have a good and safe trip.

RE: Florida Reservation?

Shouldn't be any problem north of Orlando, especially inland. Coastal locations are busier and could be a problem as March wears on and spring breakers arrive. Avoid Daytona area during Bike Week, and the week before and the week after, unless you're bikers, of course, and like a lot of noise.

RE: CAR LEFT AT HOME

I parked our Honda Fit for four months last winter. Just locked 'er up, activated security system, and left it. Started right up in the spring.
My State Farm agent says I could have/should have dropped most of my coverage for the period the car wasn't in use...just retain comp. I'll remember to do that this year.

RE: Leak around TV antenna

I took mine all apart with no book or diagram to go by. Scared to death I wouldn't be able to put it back together again before the next rain. Not bad, though. No special tools needed, just watch carefully as you take it apart.

RE: Flipped Axles/ Insurance Policies

Some TT manufacturers will custom-build units on customer's request with axles already "flipped." I don't believe their corporate legal-beagles would allow that if there were any safety issues or potential insurance or legal concerns.
I "flipped" axles on my Sunline after a few good rear-end-scraping sessions when it was new. Haven't dragged my rear since. It raised the box maybe 3-4 inches. The only down side, a very minor one, is that the first step up to go in is a little higher.

RE: Food you USED to hate, but don't now

I used to absolutely hate cauliflower; don't love it now but at least I can stand to eat it. I don't remember hating any of the others, but I had it in my mind that vegetables had to be green to be good, so any that weren't green (cauliflower, carrots, etc.) were not welcome on my plate. My likes and dislikes now have more to do with triggering heartburn.
